2 things I’d tell my 20 y/o self...

When I was a kid, I used to go out and climb trees, ride BMX bikes and skateboards, and set fire to things. I never imagined I would become an entrepreneur or an author. 

But one thing I knew was that I was always the explorer, always curious. Always thinking of things, thinking of ideas. And it occurred to me that I was a little bit different from other people.

As I spoke about my younger self on The Dion Guagliardo Podcast, I found myself reflecting on two key things I wish I knew back then.

We talked about a lot of cool things including how Finder just raised $30 million with a pre-money valuation of $650 million, and what it takes to build a successful business.

Dion asked me, of all the things I can do in the world, why an entrepreneur?

I think it’s because I can’t work for other people. Maybe I’m best suited as an entrepreneur? I’m a creator, an explorer, and I love to build things. New things. Things that have never been built before.

If I could talk to my 20-year-old self, these are the two key things I’d tell him:

1. KNOW YOURSELF

It’s important to know yourself and know what you’re good at. Know what you need and what you don’t need. Try things, take risks, and be responsible to see them through all the way. Be prepared to deal with the consequences that happen, good or bad.

2. BE PROUD OF YOURSELF

Be proud of your uniqueness and authenticity. Push the boundaries, go to the edge, and then keep going. You will never know what’s waiting for you on the other side.
